The Divine Energies and the Role of Maya
🌺 Hladini-Shakti and Its Expansions
The original spiritual energy is hladini-shakti, Krishna’s pleasure potency through which spiritual joy manifests. This same potency, in its purest form, is nondifferent from Durga in the spiritual realm.
In the material world, a partial expansion of this energy is mahamaya, which covers the soul’s awareness and entices it with material pleasures. Meanwhile, yogamaya is the aspect of hladini-shakti that facilitates spiritual realization and divine connection.
🕉️ Durga’s Multifaceted Divinity
As per the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Durga reveals her identity:
- Mahalakshmi in Vaikuntha
- Srimati Radha in Goloka
- Shivaa with Lord Shiva
- Sarasvati with Lord Brahma
Thus, Durga expands from the spiritual to the material planes, guiding, testing, and protecting souls across their journey.
🌌 Maya and Creation
Srimad-Bhagavatam and other texts describe maya as both efficient and material cause. Composed of elements such as time, activity, and nature, she enables the cosmic manifestation under the Lord's glance.
Maya is the instrument, and Lord Krishna is the creative force behind the universe, injecting life into pradhana, the primordial matter.
🔄 The Threefold Function of Maya
- Creative: Facilitates the universe’s manifestation
- Illusory: Covers the soul’s true spiritual identity
- Protective: Shields the spiritual realm from unqualified souls
🧭 The Soul’s Journey
Each soul (jiva) is marginal energy and can gravitate toward spirit or matter. Maya creates illusion to maintain the material world for those turned away from God. But through devotion and sincere seeking, the soul can transcend maya and reawaken to its spiritual essence.
📜 Conclusion
True spiritual systems aim to remove maya’s covering and restore one’s pure consciousness. The shadow of the Lord’s knowledge energy—maya—serves a divine purpose by both enabling creation and challenging the seeker.
